Our Industry and University ProtoTeam Builds
Each year, our university and industry partners form a Primary Engineer ProtoTeam and select an inspiring pupil entry from the ‘If you were an engineer, what would you do?’ Leaders Award Competition, originally displayed at our public exhibitions in the summer term.
Progress updates over 12 months allow schools, partners and the wider public to follow each build and celebrate the journey before the finished prototypes are unveiled at regional exhibitions and award ceremonies during the summer term the following year.

PRIMARY ENGINEER MACROBERT MEDAL
The Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal celebrates the creativity and innovation demonstrated by Primary Engineer ProtoTeams, who bring school pupils’ ideas to life by developing them into working prototypes. ProtoTeams enter each year in a bid to win Gold, Silver or Bronze medals. Reflecting the spirit of the MacRobert Award, the medal recognises the creativity and ingenuity of the next generation of engineers.

PRIMARY ENGINEER MACROBERT MEDAL

Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal 2025
In 2025, we returned back to London but this time at the impressive Drapers Hall. In total, 9 ProtoTeams were recognised for their achievement with Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals.
Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal 2024
In 2024, we returned back to Barony Hall in Glasgow where 10 ProtoTeams were honoured with Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals, recognising their ingenuity and collaboration.
Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal 2023
In 2023, we hosted our second Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London, with 7 ProtoTeams recognised for their innovation.
Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal 2021
Our first Primary Engineer MacRobert Medal was held in 2021 at Barony Hall in Glasgow where 6 ProtoTeams were recognised and celebrated as leading creative problem solvers in engineering innovation following the announcement at COP26.
